When working with individuals, I assist by allowing you to lead me. I strive to build an authentic connection with clients and utilize a “strength-based approach” as a means to see opportunities and solutions rather than problems and obstacles. My aim is to engage you in a joint effort to find sustainable change through growth and learning experiences.
I am experienced in a variety of therapy models. My primary areas of clinical focus are trauma, mood disorders, anxiety, relationship issues, family issues, parenting and child development. I work with individuals, couples and children/families. My background with children and families comes from prior work in the classroom with special needs children and working in supplemental education. It was this experience that helped shape my view of the client-therapist relationship and assists with making meaningful changes in my clients’ lives.
Our Care Services
Therapy for Trauma
Having the experience of trauma is prevalent in our society and needs a specialized type of attention. We are specifically trained to recognize and respond to the signs of trauma. We are sensitive to understanding how to address the wide range of symptoms that are characteristic of trauma.
- Do you feel like you’re continually on high alert?
- Does it seem like you tend to struggle with “big emotions”?
- Do you get stuck in the same relationship patterns?
- Do you find it hard to set boundaries?
You may wonder how we work with trauma symptoms, and we know the idea of it can feel daunting. Our priority is to create a safe environment that allows you to be vulnerable while instilling coping skills to help you feel secure during this important work. Our process aims to provide safety, understanding and to avoid re-traumatization. This involves building trust at your pace, and step by step collaborative work with you. We are not here to ask, “what is wrong with you?” we are here to understand “what happened to you?”
It can feel like having a virus, but since you’re not actually sick, an inner voice pushes you to keep going. It can rob you of your energy and enthusiasm for things you used to love doing.
Depression can create guilt on top of all of that because it can be hard to understand what you’re feeling and why it feels so heavy.
Depression manifests differently for everyone. Although some may struggle to get out of bed, others may continue to “function” but feel empty inside. Depression symptoms are not always obvious to the person feeling them or their loved ones. Having a space where you can talk about your experience freely, creates healing.
We are here to guide you, help you make sense of your experience and increase your self-awareness allowing you to make choices that leaving you feeling good about yourself. Being patient with yourself can be challenging, but it’s worth it, and we’re here to help you see that too.
Our brain functions are naturally wired to look for threats in the world. We are set up for survival which helps us to identify physical dangers, be aware of inconsistencies in our environment and to view the unknown as a risk.
Sometimes these signals over-function based on experiences of the past and we get internal messages that alarm us and lead to anxiety. No wonder it feels like our brains won’t shut off! The abundance of stimuli we experience everyday can make us feel overwhelmed, which can translate to being worried, fearful and/or anxious. In today’s world, this is a common experience and often needs outside support to allow you to share your worries while also learning new ways of managing that feel right for you.
We’re here to help you process what’s occupying your mind and discover tools to help you feel unstuck and more at ease. We will work together to boost mindfulness; help you feel more centered and grounded and allow you to focus on what is most important to you.
